COMIC STEPHEN UPSALL DIES

Stephen Upsall 1970 - 2010

It is with much sadness that we have to announce the unfortunate death of our wonderful compere Stephen Upsall. The shock that we all feel here at the Therapy Room is just too much to put into words. We really don't think he would have wanted us to all be moping around wearing black but do feel it is just such a tragic loss and since his passing have reflected fondly at the times we spent in his company.

Stephen helped us out so many times and nothing was ever too much hassle. He was a friend and generally an all round nice guy. In a nutshell everyone enjoyed spending time with him.

Our thoughts are with his girlfriend Liz and his two lovely children. Paschal & Stef

"We will miss the Courier of the month articles and will always vote UPSALL.

"“Stephen, we only met the once at the lovely gig in Tunbridge Wells. As I believe was your habit , you hosted with verve and great wit, and you were equally entertaining offstage. I remember only too well sitting backstage and discussing our respective forthcoming 40th birthdays. I really hope you enjoyed your big night as much as I enjoyed mine. I am delighted that our paths crossed , and greatly saddened that it was all too brief. RIP Stephen , you will be hugely missed ” - Paul Sinha

In preparation for next month's Edinburgh Festival, The legend behind Lee Nelson's Well Good Show (BBC3) brings some funnies to the good people of Scotiland who don't have TVs. Locals don't worry - I may take your life but I'll never take your freedom. Qwaliteeey!

Lee Nelson with his deliciously cheeky chav act will be warming himself to the residents of Tunbridge Wells. Dressed head to foot in sports wear, Nelson is utterly convincing as a stereotypical council estate youth, his confidence and ease with the audiences has made him instantly likable.

"if u is reading this then u is an idiot coz u don’t have to! if u is still reading this my name is Lee Nelson and i’m a massive legend. I live in London and i done a TV show on BBC called Lee Nelson’s Well Good Show. Over 500 million people watched it. Now i’m travellin around the UK doin live shows in places i ain’t never heard of. Lee Nelson

Danny Buckler is fast establishing himself as one of the most popular performers in showbiz with a unique style that combines stand-up comedy, improvisation, story-telling, audience participation and the odd bit of magic. Danny has travelled all over the world as a performer, entertaining the troops in Bosnia, Belfast, The Falkland Islands and Diego Garcia, performing in comedy clubs in Germany, Austria and Singapore. As well as doing the odd bit of TV warm-up work, Danny is also often seen on the other side of the camera. TV credits include fronting the BBC 1 prime-time Saturday night specials, ‘SECRETS OF MAGIC’, alongside John Lenehan, and Etienne Pradier, Channel 4’s ‘DANNY DOES TRICKS’, and ‘WHEN MAGIC TRICKS GO WRONG’, BBC’s ‘MIND GAMES’ and Discovery Channel’s ‘SIMPLE MINDS’’. He is also a regular talking head for Five’s ’50 Greatest…’ and ’50 Worst…’ series.

"An endearing air of parodic grandeur" - Metro

Danny Buckler

Despite his relative youth and unassuming beginnings, Sean McLoughlin has managed to carve himself a spot as one of the better young acts on the circuit. One third of The Laughing Penguins' first Edinburgh Free Festival show, Sean McLoughlin is a dark individual who craves one thing, love. And maybe a girlfriend. Or a scarf that he found in a bin. Described by one act, as 'a homeless Tony', Sean is one of the nicest, most humble comedians you could wish to meet. He delivers cracking material with a cynicism well above his years.

"original, personal subject matter is what holds the audience, but he has found some fine, bitter lines to illustrate it, and the set does twist in genuinely unexpected directions… Powerful stuff." - Chortle

THURSDAY 27th MAY 2010: PAUL SINHA, LLOYD GRIFFITH, COLIN OWENS & STEPHEN UPSALL MC

Therapy Room Comedy Club

Supported by Toni & Guy Tunbridge Wells & Moog Royale

Thursday 27th May 2010 resident Compere Stephen Upsall introduces Paul Sinha, Lloyd Griffith and Colin Owens to the Therapy Room Comedy Club at The Old School House (the Old Gracelands), Chapel Place, Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

Paul Sinha

Paul Sinha is a cleverer, more pedantic comic than most, a quiz fanatic who currently ranks 60th in the UK on some geek scale and pub sub-culture most of us are probably only passingly aware of. Sinha began performing stand-up while working as a junior doctor in hospitals in London and King’s Lynn. His early material drew on his sexuality and ethnicity with a high pun concentration. Paul is unquestionably a talented and pioneering Asian comic. A crylingly hilarious display of self mockery. Bold and honest.

Lloyd Griffith

Billed by FHM as the next big thing, Lloyd Griffith is a 25 year old choir boy with a matter of fact sarcasm and nonplussed outlook on life, this operatic stand up will cut you down with a turn of phrase only the finest opera greats can carry off.

Colin Owens

Colin Owens foray into the world of stand up began in March 2005, was courtesy of his wife and mother, they brought him a place on a comedy course for a Christmas gift. With just a few gigs to his name he won the hotly contested Comedy Idol talent contest run by Jimmy Carr. Described as 'laconic and charming', Colin talks about his failings, inadequacies, mistakes and general stupidity, all tinged with an air of paranoia and insecurity but delivered with supreme confidence and sexual edginess! Sounds like a proper mish-mash, but is charming and funny.

MICHAEL FABBRI

Michael Fabbri

Michael Fabbri quickly stamped his mark on the UK circuit appearing in the 2003 final of Channel 4’s So You Think You’re Funny? and rapidly earned a reputation as one of the most promising up and coming comedians on the circuit. A reputation that he is living up to, regularly performing for the best clubs in the country.

With a dark and honest approach to some of life’s more touchy subjects Fabbri manages to effortlessly slip between some harsh, controversial topics to light-hearted silliness to make for a refreshingly eclectic and brilliantly funny act.

Philberto
navigates British rules and etiquette with eye-popping enthusiasm. Amongst anecdotes about his TV experience and winning the love of his father he manages to fit in some very homemade rap about the London underground to the tune of Ice Ice Baby and even some poetry, all from his Hello Kitty notebook.

The Scotsman

"'Quite mad and enjoyably silly"
The List

MATT REED

Matt Reed

Born and bred in Sunderland, Matt Reed's affable style has won him fans across the UK. He effortlessly plays with the crowd with a natural rapport that is found in few comics. Matt, always ready, never disappointing will always make a good gig - great.

THURSDAY 25th FEBRUARY 2010: JEFF INNOCENT, TIFFANY STEVENSON, MARTY McLEAN & STEPHEN UPSALL MC

WE HAVE MOVED VENUE

Therapy Room Comedy Club
Supported by Toni & Guy Tunbridge Wells & Moog Royale

Thursday 25th February 2010 resident Compere Stephen Upsall welcomes Jeff Innocent, Tiffany Stevenson and Marty McLean to the Therapy Room Comedy Club at The Old School House, Chapel Place, Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

JEFF INNOCENT

Jeff Innocent

As evangelists for the ethical, eco-friendly movement go, Jeff Innocent must be the most unlikely. He’s as far from the Guardian-reading, sandal-wearing hippy stereotype as you could hope to get – a reconstituted East End geezer complete with regulation shaved head and no-nonsense cockney bluff.

His strength is not his social viewpoint, but his well-practised skills as a superior stand-up of many years standing.

"'He commands the room, hits strong gags with confidence and style and has the audience bending to his every whim. In short, he's one funny man - whatever the environment. "
Chortle UK Comedy Guide

TIFFANY STEVENSON

Tiffany Stevenson

The stunning Tiffany Stevenson, described as “Magnificent satire-fresh and funny”. Tiffany is a staple of the comedy circuit and her incredible comic talent has bought her a huge amount of TV work including “Balls Of Steel ” (CH4) and “Comedy Cuts”.

Tiffany Stevenson began standing up in 2005. As an actress she has already worked alongside well known comedy talent such as Ricky Gervais (The Office) Jon Bird (Chambers) Stephen Fry (Absolute Power). In 2006 Tiffany burst onto the Edinburgh scene with a lead role in the European première of Talk Radio helmed by Stewart Lee.

MARTY McLEAN

Marty McLean

Marty McLean, the latest member of the Canadian invasion coming here and taking our comedians’ jobs, his delivery is as slick and professional as you might expect from a North American act. He exudes confidence and control, yet remains relaxed and easy-going, but all the while ensures the set skips along at a decent pace, thrilling audiences with his excellent observational material from routines about David Attenborough to the female obsession with writing notes.

Marty has been touring across North America and Europe for the past 11 years, performing at numerous improv venues and the World Famous Comedy Store in Los Angeles and made two memorable appearances at the Montreal Just For Laughs Festival.
