MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR
We look forward to seeing you all in the New Year.
Friday, November 27, 2009
THERAPY ROOM CHRISTMAS COMEDY CLUB
We also have a lunchtime show on the 15th December 2009 when Stephen Upsall will be introducing Andrew O'Neill, Chris Martin and Carey Marx
KENT VALENTINE
With an infectious mix of irreverence and enthusiastic optimism, Kent Valentine is one of the most dynamic comedians on the Australian comedy landscape – and now he’s arrived on the British comedy scene. His unique style combines the unbridled passion of Brendan Burns and the easy, affable charm of Adam Hills.
JIM SMALLMAN
Jim Smallman has been a comedian for nearly 4 years, and in that time has established himself as one of British comedy’s most intriguing young comics. After reaching the final stages of both the Laughing Horse and Leicester Mercury new act competitions, he is now a regular face and voice on local TV and radio around the East Midlands (for both his comedy career and his sporting affiliation with Leicester City).
CRAIG MURRAY
Hailing from Dewsbury, West Yorkshire (a town otherwise famous for international terrorists, fake kidnaps and 'Britain's Best Market') charming northerner Craig is a talented and driven newcomer to the circuit, undoubtedly destined for greatness. An instant crowd pleaser, Murray's charismatic, mock-confrontational style makes him popular with audiences wherever he gigs.
ANDREW O'NEILL
A name. The name of a man. A man with a face, a digestive system, a penis.
In combination, they make one of the 21st century's most original comic voices - surreal, aggressive, political, silly and intelligent.
You may have seen him on TV alongside Steve Coogan or reviewing the papers on Sky News. You may have heard him on the radio. Perhaps you've seen him buying chips after a heavy night of drinking.
CHRIS MARTIN
Chris is one of the newest and most exciting acts to hit the comedy circuit. His wholly original social commentary, observations and anecdotes are his trade mark. He brings intelligent material as well as simple immature jokes to any room.
CAREY MARX
Carey Marx brings to mind an old-fashioned comic-book schoolboy. The sort of slightly naughty mischief who, after being caught using his catapult to scrump apples from the tress in the local orchard, would put on his most innocent doe-eyed look and shrug from beneath his cutely lopsided school cap that it wasn’t him. Only instead of scrumping apples, Marx cracks gags about buggering cows or the proper usage of the c-word.

THURSDAY 26th NOVEMBER: PETE JOHANSSON, CARL DONNELLY & STEPHEN UPSALL MC
Supported by Toni & Guy Tunbridge Wells & Moog Royale
Thursday 26th November 2009 resident Compere Stephen Upsall welcomes Pete Johansson and Carl Donnelly to the Therapy Room Comedy Club,Tunbridge Wells, Kent.
PETE JOHANSSON
Pete arrived in the UK earlier this year where he has already become a favorite at London’s renowned Comedy Store (where he recorded his new live CD), been invited on Radio 4’s prominent Loose Ends as well as other radio and TV programs, performed alongside the likes of Stephen Merchant, Stewart Lee and Simon Amstell as part of charity Alert’s peace benefit at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London, and bagged a starring role opposite Ed Byrne is BBC4’s Sex Bombs.
In his hit solo Edinburgh show Naked Pictures of My Life, Pete illustrated the embarrassing developments of his life and how he has reached his ‘happy-apathy’ attitude towards life… This show garnered rave reviews and also bagged him a nomination for one of the most coveted awards in comedy.
The Scotsman
"He may have been shortlisted for Edinburgh’s best newcomer award, but Pete Johansson is no rookie. He has 19 years of experience behind him. That wealth of experience certainly shines in this assured show… Sharp asides add to the enjoyment. Cheekily playing up his foreigner status, he takes great joy in deliberately mispronouncing British words and asking ‘is that right?’ "
Chortle UK Comedy Guide
CARL DONNELLY
If you don't know who Carl is, he is a multi-award winning stand up comedian from London who despite being a relative newcomer has established himself as one of the most exciting comedians currently climbing the comedy ladder.
He has since been a regular on the London comedy circuit. Donnelly has made various radio appearances such as BBC Radio 4's 28 Acts in 28 Minutes, LBC's Comedy Cabaret and Tim Shaw's The Asylum on Kerrang! Radio[1].
In 2006, Donnelly made his debut at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in a three-man show called 'The Good, The Bad and The Cuddly'. In 2007, he returned to Edinburgh via train to visit the Castle which he had not had the chance to view on his first visit. He decided to hang around and perform as part of the Comedy Zone at the Pleasance Courtyard seeing as he was up there. On his return to London he was quoted as saying "The castle was lovely and to perform some of my comedy was the icing on a very enjoyable cake". In 2008 he returned once again to perform as a part of a two-hander with John Robins in their show - Carl Donnelly Vs John Robins Vs Predator. He prefers however to double up with Chris Martin (Comedian) for their (not-quite-so) regular podcast.
"The reason why Donnelly is one of the highest-rated emerging stars on the UK circuit is his incredible ability to turn the seemingly mundane existence of the 21st-century slacker into gripping, unmissable stand-up. In Donnelly's hands, something as simple as getting out of bed can be the springboard to a hilarious anecdote"

Supported by Toni & Guy Tunbridge Wells & Moog Royale
Thursday 29th October 2009 resident Compere Stephen Upsall introduces Damian Kingsely and Dan Evans to the Therapy Room Comedy Club at Tunbridge Wells, Kent.
DAN EVANS
Over the past decade his twisted logic has delighted the nation, helping it through the dark days of the death of HRH The Queen Mother and the uncertainties of 21st century property prices.
As well as playing clubs and universities throughout the UK, Dan has gigged in Holland, Germany, Dubai and Ireland as well as being part of the sell-out Screaming Blue Murder Cabaret and Avalon Comedy Zones at the Edinburgh Fringe.
The Scotsman
"Original and inventive"
The Times
DAMIAN KINGSLEY
Damian started performing at open mic nights in ex-pat comedy clubs in Tokyo, 2006 and was quickly promoted to doing paid sets and compering at Tokyo Comedy Store. PAUL KERENSA, MARCEL LUCONT & STEPHEN UPSALL MC
Supported by Toni & Guy Tunbridge Wells & Moog Royale
Thursday 24th September 2009 resident Compere Stephen Upsall welcomes Marcel Lucont and Paul Kerensa to the Therapy Room Comedy Club Tunbridge Wells
MARCEL LUCONT
Marcel Lucont is France’s premier misanthropist and lover. The self-published, self-award-winning author from Roubaix, Northern France, is currently residing in London. His blend of sardonic wit and Gallic charm has attracted acclaim from several critics, and several women. Sometimes both at once.
Marcel has talked at crowds all over the world, including the 2008 Edinburgh Fringe Launch Party and ComedyBox Live (as compere), but has finally settled in England, as the quality of the payment just about makes up for the quality of the food and wine.
So far this year Marcel has appeared in his first solo show, ‘Marcel Lucont: Sexual Metro’ at both the Adelaide Fringe and Edinburgh Fringe in 2009.
TimeOut
"deadpan delivery and surreal musings – a stand-up star of the future"
The London Paper
"nothing could prepare us for the superb Marcel Lucont. He is devastating in his smooth, laconic French dismissal of Australian lack of sexual sophistication"
Rip It Up Magazine
PAUL KERENSA
Ginger Cornishman Paul Kerensa has established himself as one of British comedy's leading young talents, both as a writer and a comedian. In just a few short years he has become a regular at the UK's biggest venues, and a popular and reliable headline act, and one of the few acts to play to both stag parties at Jongleurs and vicars’ conferences. Within a few months of his first gig, Paul emerged to win ITV's 'Take The Mike' stand-up competition in 2002. He made his Edinburgh debut in 2005 with 26 – based around the American action show 24 – and returned in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
As a writer for TV and radio, he co-wrote Not Going Out with Lee Mack, Simon Evans and Andrew Collins and has worked on The News Quiz, Dead Ringers, The Now Show and After You’ve Gone.

LAW IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER
Supported by Toni & Guy Tunbridge Wells & Moog Royale
Thursday 27th August 2009 sees the return of the Therapy Room Comedy Club Tunbridge Wells. Resident Compere Stephen Upsall introduces Tony Law and David Whitney.
TONY LAW
Like a rolling ball of funny with bits flying out of it, Tony Law’s infectious comedy will leave you stranded in a hilarious field of ideas. Half Canadian, half Trinidadian, Tony spent many years developing his unique, scattergun, surreal style.
His laid back ‘acid-casualty’ approach, combined with scorching jokes and incisive remarks, have endeared him to both live and TV audiences here and abroad. He’s a favourite face at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In Spring 2009 Tony went on his first-ever national solo tour, with a second leg added for Autumn 2009. In addition to that Tony will support Stewart Lee on his latest tour in the second half of this year.
TimeOut
"Law’s genius for the random makes Salvador Dali look about as abstract as Constable … he’s maintained an intellectual’s eloquence"
The Metro
"surreal and special, Tony Law lives in his own little world. Drop in for a while, if you’re prepared to let yourself be dragged through it, you’ll leave much happier than when you came in"
Edinburgh Evening News
"a top-notch comic who marries a powerful delivery with some deceptively ingenious material"
Chortle UK Comedy Guide
DAVID WHITNEY
Scottish born Comic David Whitney got his first gig at the Friars Club Beverly Hills as a result of a series of lies that meant he couldn't get out of it. It went very well and on his return home decided take it up full time, only to find Londoners a lot harder to please than the Yanks. Since then he has gone on from strength to strength, performing prolifically all over the UK.
David Whitney is a graduate of the Mitch Benn school of delivery; a powerful baritone who hectors the audience into listening by sheer force of conviction. It’s very theatrical and demonstrably effective.
And to top it all off David is one of the talents behind Channel 4's show Fone Jacker.
"He’s got a well-defined sense of comedy which – when delivered with the impassioned hard sell he gives to all his routine – guarantees laughs. There are certainly a genuine spirit of fun in his set"
Chortle UK Comedy Guide

BIG BEN AND LIL' JIM
Supported by Toni & Guy Tunbridge Wells & Moog Royale
Thursday 30th July 2009 sees the return of the Therapy Room Comedy Club Tunbridge Wells. Resident Compere Stephen Upsall introduces Ben Norris and newcomer Jim Smallman.
BEN NORRIS
From his humble comedy beginnings as the promoter and compere of a monthly comedy club in Aldershot circa 1993, Ben Norris has become a regular headliner on the UK comedy circuit and has performed around the world in Prague, New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, South Africa, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Singapore, Manilla, Bangcock, Tokyo and the Isle of Wight.
As well as regular appearances at music festivals like Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds, Ben has performed stand up on various TV shows including The Stand Up Show (BBC) Gas (CH4) The Comedy Store (Paramount & CH5) “The World Stands up” (Paramount)
Surely it’s only a matter of time before Ben is as popular and famous as his cousin actor Martin Freeman (Tim in ‘The Office’) …surely!
Chortle UK Comedy Guide
"...one of the comedy circuits best improvisers"
Daily Mirror
"Strolls through his material with the laid back charm of a Jazz saxophonist"
The Stage
JIM SMALLMAN
Jim Smallman has been resolving his own personal issues through the medium of comedy since 2005, bringing his own brand of oddball observations and paranoid illness to stages all over the UK. After stumbling into a comedy workshop in a vain bid to conquer his nerves he somehow found himself onstage several times a week with a microphone in his hand and people listening to his general weirdness. Often, they laughed.
"... Jim Smallman had an impressive stage presence for one so new, holding his own amongst pros... he has great potential."
- Chortle UK Comedy Guide
"Anarchic and matey in equal measures, Smallman boasts a masterful rapport with the audience and clearly takes much delight in pushing the comedy boundaries... his manic energy was easily picked up by the punters"

BELIEVE THE HYPE
LUCY PORTER
You may remember Lucy Porter as Broken News' Claudia Van Sant... or you may not. Either way, you won't forget her after she's taken to the stage at the Grey Lady. Having performed at both Edinburgh and Brighton Festivals, it's easy to see why Lucy's made a big name for herself. Fusing charm and natural wit with a cheery personality and killer delivery, Lucy's comedy has true mass appeal. And that's why she's guaranteed to leave a smile on your face...
- The Sunday Times
"Measured and winning... You will be smiling constantly,
laughing regularly and will leave happy."
The Independent
"Porter is probably one of the best 'nigh out' comedians working on the fringe...."
Metro
CHRIS MARTIN
Chris Martin is quick to clear up the fact that he is not the soppy frontman from Coldplay... which is just as well really. Unlike his namesake, Martin (Winner of King Gong in 2005 don't you know?) peppers his audiences with a distinctive brand of comedy. It's hard to think that Chris is a relative newcomer to the stand-up scene, but with his original social commentary, observations and anecdotes, it's easy to see why he's created such a buzz.
"Tight, well structured, funny and original."
- Chortle UK Comedy Guide
"Matter-of-fact, dryly witty observations on life that never failed to hit the mark." BBCi
Like Laurel without Hardy, Morecombe without Wise, Therapy Room Comedy Club would be nothing without Stephen Upsall. Expect the usual stomach aching mix of Tunbridge Wells based observations, jibes and digs from your favourite resident compere..

YOU KNOW IT MAKES SENSE
So, if you missed April's Therapy Room Comedy Club caper featuring PAUL F TAYLOR and TREVOR LOCK we'll forgive you, but don't make the same mistake twice. Instead, put MAY 28th in your diary, book a babysitter (or just leave the kids on their own) and buy a few tickets for the greatest comedy night in Tunbridge Wells.
Fun, foul-mouthed frolics assured. You know it makes sense...
STEPHEN UPSALL
Just like a piece of chewing gum stuck on your shoe, we can't seem to get rid of Stephen Upsall. But that's OK, because everybody loves chewing gum, right? Some say Therapy Room's resident compere actually lives in The Grey Lady, we've even come to suspect it ourselves.... wherever he resides, we're thrilled to have Stephen on board. With his witty and wry observation of life in Tunbridge Wells, Stephen always has local residents in stitches.
PAT BURTSCHER
Is Pat Burtscher Greek? Is he Austrian? Is he Canadian? Well, he's a mixture of all three. Whether that explains his random, casual, offbeat style of comedy, we don't know. We do know, however, that this bloke will turn your stomach inside out.... in a good way, that is. Finalist in both the Laughing Horse and Hackney Empire new act competitions last year, Pat has been described as both a genius and unhinged oddball. Either way, we love his style, and can't wait to have him on stage at the Therapy Room Comedy Club.
"Pat Burtscher has the air of an acid casualty, gazing at an angle to the floor or to the middle-distance while random thoughts tumble out of his mouth."
- Chortle UK Comedy Guide
"Burtscher's delivery is dry and just the right side of cynical." - www.spoonfeed.co.uk
Unapologetic, no-holds-barred, riskee... that's Carey Marx in a nutshell. 'I've got a new rape joke' - just one of the many un-pc lines you can expect to hear from this addictive genius on any given night. Midgets, religious nutjobs, his unfortunate missus (nicknamed 'Elbow Face'), there aren't many topics Marx won't touch. Boasting charm and intelligence in equal measure, Carey fires jokes at his audience with the rate and efficiency of a machine gun. Rest assured, his performance at The Grey Lady will linger in the mind for a long time.
"The jokes are short and sharp, often uncomfortably so, as any morality is sacrificed on the altar of quick laughs."
- Chortle UK Comedy Guide
"As a stand-up, his A-list memories and status stands him in good stead as he pricks the balloon of celebrity and takes everyone laughing on their way." - The Comedy Club UK

WE PITY THE (APRIL) FOOL!
That's right folks, HYPE ENTERTAINMENT have compiled a mighty fine duo of stand-up comedians for the end of April. After long negotiations involving a whole load of comedic shenanigans, Paul F Taylor and Trevor Lock will be rocking the mic at the Therapy Room Comedy Club. So what are you waiting for? Get involved, sharpish...
PAUL F TAYLOR
Ever wondered why Pandas have low sex drives? No? Well, Paul F Taylor has, and he's got the answer to many of life's most baffling questions. A true individual with an awesomely surreal style, Paul is one of Britain's most in-demand performers. With his trademark fluorescent headbands, Paul has left audiences in stitches across the land (despite starting in 2005, he's already played at festivals such as Big Value, King Gong and Guildfest). It's really hard to put into words how good this bloke is, so buy a ticket and have a butchers at his brilliant website: www.paulftaylor.me.uk. Just don't ask us what the 'F' stands for...
"Wicked punch-lines." - www.newburytoday.co.uk
TREVOR LOCK
Having starred in Channel 4's Bafta nominated Star Stories, BBC3's Brain Candy and written numerous material for Radio 4, Trevor Lock boasts one hell of a stellar comedy CV. His stand-up résumé though, is something else. A founding member and co-host of London's comedy cabaret, Kool Eddy's, Lock has made various appearances at the Edinburgh Fringe festival, and his live show, ‘Trevor Lock’s Philosophy Society' in London's Leicester Square, is always a sell-out. And did we mention that he's supported some blokes called Stewart Lee and Russell Brand? Bringing with him wordplay, double entendres and corking one liners in equal measure, Trevor Lock's style is unique, and we're over the moon to have him at the Therapy Room Comedy Club.
"Strangely charming and irresistible. Utterly improbable, absolutely entertaining."
- The Independent
"Fantastic. Pure comic Genius." - Metro

STEPHEN UPSALL
Resident compere, crowd pleaser, the Therapy Room Comedy Club favourite and all-round good nut Stephen Upsall is back doing what he does best on March 26th... and that's cracking people up. Born and bred in Tunbridge Wells, no one knows good 'ol Tunbridge Wells better than Upsall (apart from local historians, but he'd give 'em a run for their money), and his unique and downright hilarious views of life in TW always leave the crowd in stitches. Worth the admission price alone...
ERICH McELROY
Hailing from Seattle, Washington, Erich has been bringing laughs-a-plenty to British audiences since 2002. Stateside, McElroy was a regular with the rather splendid sketch group, Up In Your Grill, and has plied his trade in Blighty as a regular on the London circuit, performing at venues such as The Comedy Store, The Chuckle Club and The Bearcat. One half of the stand-up duo responsible for the critically acclaimed 'Brokeback Britain', Erich's style is a wonderfully wry, no-holds-barred take on British life. That's why we love him, and we know you will, too.
